Medical Hospital Nursing & Public Health Outreach Fiji Review

Hello Lauren,

Highlights of the trip:
Volunteering in Fiji was an incredible and unforgettable experience. Each one of the projects allowed us to learn and understand a bit more about the community where we worked.
As a nurse, I have to say that the most amazing experience was at Lautoka Hospital during the last 4 weeks (where we spent 2 weeks working in the Women’s medical ward and 2 weeks in the ED). It was a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and also to learn about Fijian healthcare system. The medical team was very welcoming and friendly. I wish I could have stayed longer! (maybe for a future project ?).
Lovu community was also very interesting and challenging, as they hardly have access to healthcare facilities we had the feeling of being useful to the community.
We also enjoyed the islands and hotels during the nutritional project and have an amazing time with an amazing team!

Comments on the team, food and accommodation:

Personally, staying with a host family is the best accomodation option. With our family we could learn a bit more about the Fijian lifestyle and it offers an authentic window into their culture.

The food was simply AMAZING! As a vegan I thought it would be difficult to find some food without meat/egg/dairy but they prepared everyday some vegan dishes for me. I’ve never eaten so much coconut in my life! Haha

Any improvements to help us be better:
The only improvement I’d like to recommend is regarding the nutritional project. I think it could be more interesting if the volunteers could perhaps eat with the employees (breakfast, lunch and dinner) so the team could spend more time with them and learn more about their diet issues. It could also allowed the volunteers to experience the fijian local life more than the ‘tourist and luxury side’ of Fiji.

I want to sincerely thank you for all your help and hard work making this project possible! I’d definitely recommend it to everyone!! ❤

You can find some pictures on my Facebook, if you want some more photos or any other information about the trip just let me know!

Thank you so much!!

Carolina
